There are very few options in Big Sky, and based on this I had low expectations for Chets. I was pleasantly surprised. Our service was perfect -- not overbearing and not ignoring us. My travelling companion and I ordered chicken sandwiches which arrived relatively promptly. The food was standard fill-you-up fare and as my companion noted, "this chicken is actual chicken." They also have a fully stocked bar and a small but decent local beer selection which was appreciated. In summary, not the worst food in Big Sky.

Food is well prepared and tasty. Sampled a cheese burger with American cheese and the French dip sandwich. Both were delicious and very affordable. Service is pretty prompt.

Not so good -- granted there are very limited choices at Big Sky, but I think grabbing a hot dog from Yeti Dogs is better. I arrived a little after 1pm, and there was a 15 minute wait for a table. Once inside, I noticed a number of empty tables, and guess they are perhaps understaffed. After waiting another 10 minutes before anyone took my order, I waited over 30 minutes for a Reuben sandwich and fries to arrive. I was starving by now and most anything should have tasted fantastic. However, this lunch was less than satisfying. The Reuben is effectively a grilled cheese sandwich, and for $15, I would expect a better sandwich. There was a lot of very runny thousand island dressing that made the bread soggy. All the meat had slid to one side which left half the sandwich with no meat. The two slices of swiss cheese were not melted. I'm a bit shocked that this took over 30 minutes to assemble. It's a shame that there are not more dining choices in Big Sky that are better than Chet's.

BF and I went to Chet's on the first night we were in Big Sky, we stayed at the Huntley so it's convenient. Food and service was good/average. BF had the elk/bison/beef meatloaf and I had the mahi mahi fish and chips. Pretty good, hit the spot after a day of traveling from Bridger Bowl. Our drinks were tasty, BF had manhattans, I had whiskey and diet. Typical Montana decor, you know what I mean. Prices were a little on the high side, but the food was good quality and as you'll learn, there are slim pickings in Big Sky

I've tried most places in Big Sky, and I haven't found anyplace that I wanted to return to. But because there aren't too many places, you have little choice. Last night I got the Wild Game Meatloaf (elk, bison, and beef combo). It was a small dollop of meatloaf wrapped in what was supposed to be bacon but was really bacon fat (like, seriously -- ALL fat). The meatloaf was pretty dry, and it was served with tons of warm Heinz ketchup piled on top of it (that was the only discernible seasoning -- table ketchup on the top of it). Beneath the meatloaf was what tasted boxed/powdered mashed potatoes -- you know, the kind that are so watery they barely hold together, and have no flavor? The grilled asparagus I asked for on the side was, by far, the best part of the meal. It was really, really good! For dessert, I got the Grasshopper Pie. It was very light and tasty. Service was polite, but it took FOREVER to cook my food -- nearly 30 minutes -- when the restaurant was almost empty.

We came here with a group of 8 on our vacation for a nice meal and after waiting over 45 minutes for our food we asked the waiter to check on it for us. He said it would be right out and the food came out soon after. Two of our entrees were so cold they had obviously been sitting out for quite a while. We asked for the manager and were greeted by a very combative manager who didn't apologize for the wait or the temperature of the food. He told us that it wasn't his fault and that he had a large group in the other room he was dealing with at the time. During this whole ordeal our table was served beverages only once. I wouldn't eat here again even if the food was free.

Seen Better Days, No Service Spent 4 days at Big Sky and decided to drop in to Chet's after dinner on our last night for a night cap around 8:30pm. Expected a warm, welcoming place as this is supposed to be the original cornerstone lodge of the resort... sadly disapointed. First the place smelled like an old French fry machine. We seated ourselves at the couch by the fire... check that, cold, empty fireplace. After waiting for 10+ minutes with no server stopping to wait on us I went to the bar. Had to wait while the bartender, standing in the alcove of the bar finished texting before I could order drinks. Returned to the empty fireplace under too bright lights and had our cocktails. Still no one came by to check on us and after finishing our cocktails and waiting, picked up our glasses.and returned to the bar, passing two servers leaning against the rail, engrossed in their own conversation, apparently oblivious to their customers. Ordered a second cocktail and returned to our seat. Halfway through our cocktail a bus girl passed by pushing a vacume even though we and several other tables were still in the bar. 9:00 pm, I guess the staff wanted everyone to clear out so they could shut down. This place could be so cool but felt more like a self serve cafeteria.

I have been to Chet's many times over many years. If you break it down it would be something like this (based on Yelp's five star scale): Food gets a four star rating. Everything on the menu is tasty and is always served promptly. They have some really unique dishes as well as some classics and everything is prepared up to a consistently good quality. Service gets a four star rating. The servers are never too intrusive, but are always there when you need them. I have always been impressed with their ability to remember your favorite drinks if you relax with them on consecutive or close evenings. Entertainment gets a five star rating. I have always loved the engaging Crazy Austrians. They simply must be experienced. Comfort gets an "illegal" six star rating. The comfort of sitting in front of their giant fireplace on a large cozy couch after a rigorous day of skiing and having their signature warm drinks (or even just your favorite classic beverage of choice) is unprecedented. All-in-all, I give Chet's five stars. It is an absolutely beloved place to relax and I always yearn to be there when I am far away.

We stayed at the Shoshone Resort and Chet's was the attached bar/restaurant there. Its a really laid-back and cozy place to eat a bison burger, listen to live music, or sip some spiked cocoa by the huge wood fireplace. On the walls are mounted moose and other local game. Unlike previous reviewers, our food was piping hot and brought out promptly every time we dined there (4 x over a week). Make sure you catch the Crazy Austrians who play the the afternoon/evenings, and are really entertaining. (They have a 10 ft ricola horn that is available for testing out!)

We live on the mountain during ski season and end up going here when ever we have friends or family visiting. The food is good, but the Crazy Austrians are the main reason for our return. The best all family entertainment anywhere and for that they get my five star.

BBQ ribs were great, but my Dad's bison/beef/elk meatloaf was bland and dry. Considering the ingredients, we'd hoped for more. The biggest issue is apathetic service and a bland dining room that wreaks of hotel management. Big Sky would do themselves a favor by turning over the dining facilities to an independent group. You can tell no one who's there day to day has the agency or responsibility, like an independent owner would have. It seems to be a bit on auto-pilot. Even just opening up the bar area to make it flow better and feel more lively would be a good start.

We stayed in Big Sky and a free breakfast at Chet's came with the hotel room. I see why they have to give away the food for free. The service was horribly slow. Horribly. My wife and I ordered eggs, bacon and toast for us and our two year old. Very standard breakfast. 43 minutes after arrival with no food in sight and a crying kid, I flagged down a bus boy (our waiter hadn't been by for 30 mins). He told us it would be another 10 minutes or so. The place had customers but it was by no means packed. The food finally came about an hour after arrival. We were in a hurry at that point, so I had mine boxed to go. When I opened it, they had crammed all of the eggs, meat, fruit and biscuit into a small box in a jumbled mess. It was gross. Don't be fooled by the free meal. You will get what you pay for.

This was a buffet breakfast and it started well with a very pleasant server. It went downhill from there. We weren't told what came with the buffet (juice, hot chocolate, etc. - coffee is a "given." In the buffet line there were two varieties of scrambled eggs (one plain and one w/something else in them.) Another variety of eggs would have been good. They ran out of pasties a long time before the end of the serving time and they were not replenishes. There were also pancakes, yogurt, fresh fruit and biscuits and gravy in the buffet line. My husband asked for hot sauce and catsup - hot sauce was FINALLY received after the eggs were eaten. The server also did not refill my husband's coffee. We won't be back
